EL SURTIDOR, Paraguay

TOP AWARD for SAVING THE CHACOS

The digital news team at El Surtidor used a highly visual  4-part series to tell the story of The Gran Chacos forest, which was losing a hectare of trees every minute. The team began with data-efficient mobile content in a “scrollytelling” style which allows users to swipe to compact chunks of content vertically or horizontally, then distributed tailored elements on multiple channels, such as posters for Twitter, avatars for Facebook, and videos for city buses, etc. Its considerable young audience was a key to pushing the new president to take action toward stopping the deforestation.  This video describes the project (in Spanish with English subtitles), and this website shows the content. What the judges said:

“This project has everything:  It takes into account the local context young people confront, activates youth civil society with the focus on deforestation and explains why anybody should care. It’s impactful, innovative and inspiring.”

DAINIK JAGRAN, India

SILVER AWARD for GETTING A CITY TO SMILE AGAIN

This multimedia group mobilized thousands of students in a successful push to reduce pollution in the choking city of Lucknow. A key element was simple: fun, anti-pollution face masks featuring a smile, plus pressure on local authorities, and citizens, to take action. The result was clear: Lucknow is now less polluted.

This excerpt from the campaign video describes the problems the city faced and what the campaign demanded.

What the judges said:

The way that this media entity engaged youth to make positive environmental change in Lucknow is both exceptional and a great example to other news media. Through youth engagement and environmental action, they changed local government policy and in the process had a positive impact on their brand.

YOUNG REPORTERS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, Denmark

SPECIAL COMMENDATION

This organization has 340,000 student reporters in 38 countries doing solutions reporting. Students can use any medium but must distribute their stories through social media and through a news entity and also encourage action.

There are countless examples of student's work informing communities and inspiring decision-makers to take action. For example, in Israel, YRE students influenced a local government to allocate more money for waste management . In Portugal, YRE students collected thousands of cigarette butts and educated festival participants about the issue of litter.

What the judges said:

YRE does a great job on a global scale helping young people do exemplary environmental journalism work. It is very impressive not only for its international reach but also for having real impact at the local level.
